Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

  • Throughout this program, I have had many experiences that have expanded my perspective related to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. There have been many topics related to this area that have made local and national news throughout the last three years. During this program I have served as a member on the executive board of the Allied Health Ambassadors program, and assisted in local outreach events to improve awareness and also representation in Allied Health programs. As an African American male, I represent a minority within the physical therapy profession, and I recognize that representation plays an important role in improving diversity. During our Advance Practice Issues course, I chose to focus on improving diversity within the profession as my topic for innovation and transformation. During my research I was educated on surprising statistics associated with the lack of diversity in physical therapy providers and also the lack of diversity in physical therapy utilization. All of the experiences related to the topics of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will help shape my thinking and actions going forward into my career. I aim to improve diversity within the profession and will work to have a positive impact on the profession and healthcare as a whole.

Reflection

  • The past three years have allowed me to grow significantly as a clinician and also as a person. With the help of the faculty, my classmates and family, I have gained knowledge that will help me succeed as a physical therapist and more importantly to have a positive impact on each individual I encounter in the future. This program has been challenging, but it has prepared each of us for the future that lies ahead. I recognize the importance of what we do and the critical role that we have in the promotion of health for all. For a total of 7 years I have been at UNC and have created relationships and connections that will last forever. I plan to stay in North Carolina and begin my career as a physical therapist in the outpatient setting. Thank you to the entire Carolina Family!
