Professional Goal Statement

After graduating from UNC with a DPT degree, my goal is to be employed at an outpatient, skilled nursing, or home health setting working with older adults with orthopedic and neurological conditions. My ideal clinic would be an environment that focuses on patient care rather than productivity in order to provide the best care possible for members of the community. I hope to gain mentorship, refine my skills as a therapist, and grow as a clinician.

• January 2022 – Start and grow a PT social media channel

• October 2022 – Sit for and pass National Physical Therapy Examination

• 2025 – Become APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor and take first DPT student

Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

During my time at UNC, our coursework has integrated aspects of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in regard to patient care and systemic issues. Topics such as implicit bias, health literacy, access to healthcare, and the lack of diversity in physical therapy have given me a broader understanding of personal and systemic issues related to providing physical therapy care. I have been exposed firsthand to these issues on my first three clinical rotations in underserved, rural areas of North Carolina. Working with patients who represent the various socioeconomic groups of our state has given me perspective as I largely grew up in the suburbs. Additionally, my experience on the Tyrrell County service learning trip this year further opened my eyes to healthcare discrepancies and the hardships of living in rural parts of North Carolina.

Reflection

I have grown so much as a person during my time at UNC’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program. There have certainly been challenging times navigating coursework during a pandemic, however, these challenges have made me more adaptable. Each one of my clinical rotations have been unique in their own way and I have added aspects from my treatment approach from each of them. I hope to continue to learn and grow each year as I transition from student physical therapist to licensed physical therapist. I’m excited to see where my journey will take me and I will always be grateful to the support from the faculty at UNC DPT and all of my classmates.
