Reflective Statement

I am eternally grateful that I had the opportunity to attend UNC’s physical therapy program. These past three years have been very challenging both educationally and personally, but it has pushed me to grow in every aspect of my life.  Through this program, I have not only learned the clinical skills necessary to become a licensed physical therapist, but I also have had unforgettable experiences with my classmates, professors, and clinicians both in North Carolina and abroad. I appreciate the program’s emphasis on differential diagnosis, critical thinking, biopsychosocial factors that impact patient care, evidence-based practice, and patient-centered care. UNC’s PT program has provided me with a broader and more nuanced understanding of the field of physical therapy and has helped me identify my own professional interests, which lie in geriatrics and orthopedics.

Additionally, the program has enabled me to further cultivate my passion of service to underrepresented communities by offering opportunities to volunteer at homeless shelters and a pro bono clinic (SHAC), educate minority high school students about the field of physical therapy, as well as use my Spanish language abilities and PT skills to serve underserved populations in Guatemala.  I hope to continue to embody and foster this spirit of service throughout my career. I am excited to apply the knowledge I have learned and continue to refine my skills as a doctor of physical therapy.
