Personal Reflection

My passion for the physical therapy profession began when my mother was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome when I was 10 years old. Despite my young age, I found it fascinating that I was able to witness my mother progress from being totally dependent in a wheelchair to walking independently again through the guidance and instruction of physical therapists. My interest in physical therapy was further strengthened in 2013 when I was a patient in the ICU with orthopedic and cardiopulmonary complications due to a motor vehicle accident that resulted in myself being underwater. While in the hospital, physical therapists assisted myself with breathing and walking again when I simply did not think that was possible. In hindsight, I’m very grateful of having experience with being a patient as I believe it has made me become a more sympathetic physical therapist while also understanding the importance of early mobility within the acute care setting.

As I reflect on my time within the UNC DPT program, I am extremely grateful and humbled to have been given the opportunity to learn from such educated and supportive faculty members. Although the past three years have been challenging, it was an experience that I would do all over again if possible. Aside from the wonderful education I received, I was blessed to meet so many genuinely compassionate people along the way, both classmates and faculty. Funny enough, there were certainly times where I was doubtful of my knowledge only to later have the experience of wondering how I didn’t initially grasp a concept easily as it now seems so natural! These comforting realizations have not only made myself feel more confident entering the workforce but further support my personal ideology that UNC has the best DPT program anyone could receive!

Hailey: Great job on your portfolio. While you were inspired by other physical therapists, I am certain that you will do the same for someone else one day. It has been a pleasure to watch you grow and develop especially in the acute care setting. Congrats and good luck! Lisa
