Professional Goal Statement:

Following graduation, I plan to practice acute care physical therapy in a hospital within the research triangle. Within the scope of acute physical therapy care, I intend to provide intensive care rehabilitative services.  I would enjoy practicing in a teaching hospital so that I can help provide clinical education and training to future and current health professionals. After getting experience I would like to sit for a specialist exam. After my experiences in the acute care setting, I am looing forward to options available.

Carrer Plan:

May 2015:Graduate from Lenoir-Rhyne University with a B.S. in Exercise Science

August 2018:Graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with my DPT.

October 2018: Take and pass licensure exam

November 2018:Start career at UNC Hospital or Duke University Hospital in acute inpatient.

2018-indefenite:Participate in multiple continuing education courses.

November 2020:Become a Clinical Instructor

2022:Sit for Specialist Exam

Strengths:

-Communication with patients, families and peers.

-Solid educational foundation.

-Highly motivated to pursue experiences that will push my development.

Weaknesses:

-Need to gain practice in appropriate assessment tools for the inpatient population.

-Familiarity with coding and reimbursement.

-Intensive care rehabilitation.

Objectives:

1) Attain general educational background in the science of physical therapy.

2)Pass the Physical Therapy Board Licensure.

3) Attain specific knowledge of intensive care rehabilitation physical therapy.

Specific Strategies:

-Complete general coursework for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

– Identify specific elective coursework to increase general education in the specific fields of acute care rehab.

-Seek out clinical opportunities in acute care rehab with a emphasis on intensive care rehabilitation.

-Attend APTA conference sessions for continuing education.

Plans for Future:

I plan on taking Advanced Orthopedic Assessment for my fall elective and either Spanish or an Integrated Clinical Experience elective. I would really enjoy taking the Developmental Disabilities Across the Lifespan and the International Service Learning Trip in the spring. After looking over the list of opportunities this week, I am very interested in work with Dana on the pediatric curriculum. I have been able to network and gain a lot of pediatric experience while on clinical and would love to be apart of this project. My plan is to look over the list of possible opportunities this week and start contacting mentors within the next 2 weeks.

Works:

Final Draft-FAI-Adv Ortho Assessment

Alberta Infant Motor Scale Voicethread

Reflective Statement:

As I reflect on my experience in this Doctorate of Physical Therapy program I am astonished at how my interests in the profession has changed. I have explored various areas in PT, and have been surprised in my growing desire for knowledge in all of these areas. My interest in physical therapy began with my exposure to outpatient orthopedics when I was in high school. I would often find myself rehabbing an injury post sporting event. I have found that my desire for physical therapy goes beyond one setting and that I find myself interested in not only sports orthopedics but trauma acute care and pediatrics. I am thankful for finding a profession that allows me to expand my knowledge in different areas and have experience in various settings.
