Third Year Elective Courses, Projects and Continuing Education

In my third year of physical therapy school I chose to pursue electives, projects, and continuing education courses that would strengthen my knowledge and emphasize my passion for orthopedic physical therapy, health and wellness, and community education.

PHYT 824 Health and Wellness

I worked alongside a fellow classmate (Chenin Duclos) to establish a 10 week community based therapeutic yoga and education program for individuals’ with osteoarthritis. TherapeuticYoga_RossDuclos_

PHYT875 Advanced Orthopedic Elective

I chose to take this elective to gain a deeper understanding of the histology, tissue mechanics and healing processes associated with common pathology seen in orthopedic physical therapy to help guide my evaluation and intervention techniques. As part of this course I performed a literature review and synthesized the findings on the clinical and pathological differences in the diagnosis and treatment of medial tibial stress syndrome and tibial stress fractures. RossM_MTSSandTSF

PHYT800 Independent Orthopedic Elective: APTA Current Concepts in Orthopedic Physical Therapy 3rd Edition.

I took this elective to further enhance my knowledge of orthopedic physical therapy evaluation and intervention techniques; as well as to improve my hands on clinical skills and gain experience teaching as a TA.

PHYT752/854: Capstone Project. Bike Fit and Knee Pain in Road Cyclists.

The purpose of this capstone project was to explore the scientific literature on the relationship between bike fit and knee pain in road cyclists and synthesize the findings to develop educational and practical application materials that benefited the local community. Aside from learning a great deal about bike fit and its relationship to knee pain, I experienced many of the other roles and responsibilities of physical therapists. I gained experience working as an educator in my community and had the unique opportunity to form a collaborative relationship with other professionals to help optimize community health and wellness.

Reflective Statement__________________________________

These past three years have solidified that physical therapy is the right career path for me. Physical therapy allows me to focus on my passion for the human body and kinetics, health and wellness, and helping and empowering others. As this part of my physical therapy journey comes to an end I am filled with gratitude for the people that I have met along the way and the lessons that I have learned. The next step in my journey is an orthopedic physical therapy residency program at Duke where I hope to continue to enhance my orthopedic and general physical therapy skills. Following this, I do not know where life will take me but I am excited for the continual opportunities for growth and development that physical therapy will bring me. UNC’s DPT program has provided me with all of the tools to become a successful physical therapist and I hope that I will continue to represent this program with the outstanding reputation that it deserves.
