Professional Goal Statement

My goal is to become a well-rounded and knowledgeable physical therapist in my chosen area of practice. Currently, this area is in the outpatient orthopedics and sports setting; however, I want to continue to develop my vestibular and neurological skills to also utilize in clinical practice. I aim to continue to learn, grow, transfer of my academic knowledge into clinical practice, and practice my clinical skills for further development and eventual mastery.

Career Plan:

  • December 2009: Bachelors of Science in Movement Science from the University of Michigan
  • August 2014: Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • October 2014: Sit and pass the Licensure Board Examination
  • November 2014: Become a full time practicing physical therapist
  • 2014-2016: Clinical practice in Michigan
  • 2015: Complete APTA Orthopedic Section Independent Study Course
  • 2016-2017: Transfer license to North Carolina
  • 2018: Explore certifications in chosen interest areas (orthopedics, sports, vestibular)
  • 2018: Become a Clinical Instructor
  • 2020: Remain open to new opportunities, make new goals, and achieve them!

Self Assessment:

Strengths

  •  Communication and interpersonal skills with patients, peers, and mentors
  • Wide range of clinical experiences and geographic locations
  • Eagerness to learn and strengthen my clinical and academic skills
  • Extensive sports medicine experience as a collegiate athlete and coach

Areas for Further Improvement

  • The need for general work experience
  • Expand my orthopedic knowledge (i.e. spine, manual therapy) via mentorship and continuing education
  • Further clinical experiences in neurological settings
  • Higher level skills and confidence with examination, evaluation, and treatment of complex patient cases
  • More experience with billing, policy, and administrative aspects in physical therapy

Objectives:

  1. Graduate from the physical therapy program at UNC
  2. Prepare and sit for the physical therapy licensure examination
  3. Develop clinical skills and prepare to become board certified specialist

Specific Strategies:

  • Choose elective courses that support and further my educational and professional interests and skill set
  • Collaborate with my mentors in NC and MI to discuss possible learning opportunities
  • Create strategies and a study plan for time efficiency with online courses and for the board examination.
  • Attend an licensure examination preparation course
  • Develop and follow a study plan to succeed on the licensing board exam
  • Gain and improve manual therapy skills through practice and continuing education courses
  • Attend and become involved with local district and national association meetings

Electives, Sample Work, and Capstone Project:

Elective 1: Advanced Orthopedics — This course further developed my orthopedic knowledge, evaluation thought processes, and intervention skills by delving deeper into histology, tissue healing, and musculoskeletal pathology.  I was interested in learning more about Medial Patellar Plica Syndrome (MPPS) in this course. I had previously heard about this diagnosis, but knew little about it. I learned a great deal from this assignment and hope to transfer it into the clinic.

Elective 2:  Advanced Neurology — This course facilitated my understanding of various neurologic conditions throughout the lifespan. When applicable, I chose to focus on orthopedic related issues to expand my clinical thinking. I delved into two distinct topics that were related to my interests in orthopedics—Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and Sports Related Concussion. I also added Interactive Metronome to the special topics webpage. Check it out!

Capstone:  I focused my capstone project on shoulder injury prevention for competitive swimmers. As a former competitive swimmer, I have first hand experience of swimming’s grueling training demands, physical and emotional stress, and side effects of shoulder pain and injuries. Shoulder pain is a mainstay and an accepted byproduct of swim training and competition. I have seen many swimmers excel and then forced to quit the sport due to shoulder pain and injuries. I created a preventative exercise program for the entire swim season based on the available research in order to maintain shoulder health and prevent shoulder pain and injuries in competitive swimmers. Reflection:

It is incredible to think that I have almost completed my DPT training. Looking back on these past three years, I can say without a doubt that Carolina was the right place for me. The nature of the program, our knowledgeable and friendly staff, and my classmates have made this unique experience a once in a lifetime opportunity that I am truly blest to have experienced. My passion for physical therapy has grown with each new class and clinical rotation. After careful and patient consideration throughout these years, I believe I have found my niche within physical therapy. I am excited to learn more and to continue the next chapter of this journey as a practicing physical therapist.
