Coursework

Evidence Based Practice II:

In this course I constructed a PICO question that would be relevant to my overall doctoral project.  The question that I chose was: For athletes, who underwent ACL reconstruction, is an accelerated rehabilitation protocol or nonaccelerated protocol associated with improved function and a quicker return to play?  After completing a literature review I generated an evidence table of the 8 articles.  Following completion of the evidence table I wrote a summary paper explaining the findings of the literature review.

Advanced Orthopedic Assessment:

Due to my strong interest in sports and orthopedic physical therapy I felt that the advanced orthopedic assessment elective would help to round out my entry-level knowledge in the field.  This course allowed for me to select individual topics of interest to further expand my knowledge in injuries, conditions, and tissue properties.  My final for the course was a research paper on the ACL that included information about anatomy, MOI, incidence, prevalence, risk factors, treatment, and outcome measures.

Advanced Neuromuscular:

I enrolled in advanced neuromuscular in order to further develop my knowledge in this area.  With neuromuscular knowledge being a personal weakness, I felt that taking this course would help me review for licensure and develop the skills necessary for integrating neuromuscular and orthopedic treatments.  This course allowed for me to focus on topics of interest to me such as diabetes and spastic diplegia.

Capstone:

The development of my capstone project was a combination of previous work above as well as additional research into return-to-play criteria following ACL reconstruction.  Additionally, I combined forces with Angela Lauten to produce a voice thread presentation for future use in the DPT knee curriculum.  You can see the hard work we put in by following this link:  http://dptcapstone.web.unc.edu (look for my name on the left side of the page).

Reflection:

Three years ago I came to Carolina anticipating the hardest 3 years of my life.  While there have been many high and low moments to my journey I wouldn’t trade the experience or the people I endured it with.  At Carolina I gained a strong baseline education and have been able to experience wonderful clinical opportunities.  The final year of schooling has allowed for me to reflect on my personal strengths and weakness and to personalize my learning in order to maximize my potential as a physical therapist.  Becoming an independent learner in the 3rd year has allowed for me to truly understand evidence-based practice from a research standpoint.  Until this year reading articles and critically analyzing them was difficult and time consuming.  After canvasing hundreds of articles I have developed an eye for strong levels of evidence and have begun the transition of evidence into my final clinical setting.  My final clinical rotation has also been effective in being a learning experience, through allowing me to identify my areas of weakness and hone my skills with certain patient populations.  While I am still far from completing my professional goals I believe it is important to take the advice of Eric Butterworth, “Nothing stops the man who desires to achieve. Every obstacle is simply a course to develop his achievement muscle. It’s a strengthening of his powers of accomplishment.” Thank you Carolina for the education, the memories, and instilling the desire to always become more.
